The year’s 1983. Many things came to existence during this time; Microsoft Word makes its debut, The Atari 5200 was released, Mario Bros first releases in Japan, a gallon of milk costs $1.35, and ARPANET officially changes to use the Internet Protocol, creating the Internet. Yes, the Internet was invented in 1983.

Now all those things aforementioned are great, However… there was just one thing created that I hold an even deeper connection to. The Porsche 928.

The blockbuster hit of 1983 was the film Risky Business.

Ecstatic when his parents leave on vacation for a few days, high school senior Joel Goodsen (Tom Cruise) cuts loose with his best friend Miles. After an attempt at securing the services of a prostitute goes slightly awry, Joel hires gorgeous Lana (Rebecca De Mornay) for a night of delight. Stunned by the amount of Lana’s “bill” the next morning, Joel grows frantic after he crashes his father’s Porsche. In an effort to raise lots of money fast, a desperate Joel turns the house into a brothel.

Of course no one can forget the scene of Tom Cruise sliding across hard-wood floors in his tube socks but throughout the film Cruise is seen speeding down streets and drifting corners in his dad’s Porsche 928.

1983

The Porsche 928 was a first attempt at a front-engined V8 for the German car manufacturer. This was considered to be a luxury sports car at the time and far from attainable for a high school student.

In 2011 I got my drivers license. Finally, the piece of plastic that symbolizes freedom and unbound me from having to ride a school bus ever again. What made this moment in my life even better was the car I was going to be driving.

Most teenagers first cars include beaters from brands such as Ford, Dodge, Pontiac, GM, Toyota, and Nissan to name a few. Thanks to my dad my first car was none of those. Instead, my first car was a Porsche 928 S from 1983.

Before I even got the keys to the car my dad had one requirement, I had to watch Risky Business. To think that I was about to be driving the same car Tom Cruise was, which at the time was a top of the line sports car, was enough to make anyone excited.

2011

For a car that was almost 30 years old, it was in great condition. There technically was nothing needing to be modified however, I did have my own tastes and preferences and with that came a desire to make it my own.

In 2014 my dad and I took the summer to reupholster and upgrade the interior of the car.

Upgrades:

-Tinted the Windows

-Removed the factory tan interior (Carpet & Seats)

-Replaced with black carpet and reupholstered black leather seats

-Built a custom 8in. sub woofer enclosure mounted between the back seats

*I don’t have any pictures of this but I promise it was really cool

-Painted the break calipers red

-Plasti-Dipped the wheels black

“Hey Siri, Is it a crime to plasti-dip Porsche Wheels?”

BEFORE

AFTER

Once it was all said and done I could finally say I made this car my own. I was driving a 1980’s Porsche with modern interior upgrades beating local Mustangs off the line, life was good.
